Welcome to Wigmore Primary School

Wigmore Primary School is a vibrant, stimulating and safe environment in which to learn. Our children are polite, behave, work hard and enjoy their learning. These are our expectations which allow our children to flourish and make excellent progress.

We welcome children between the ages of 4 and 11. We are a one form entry school with the capacity to teach 30 children in each teaching group; this means that each year group is accommodated in a separate class. In total, we have seven classes with individual teachers. In Reception and Key Stage 1, teaching assistants are also assigned to each class.

Our dedicated staff team are committed to providing a happy, safe and engaging environment that allows our children to succeed. We encourage them to be inquisitive learners, who value their achievements and respect everyone in our learning community. We have well-developed systems to support our children’s emotional development and well-being.

Although our end of key stage outcomes are significantly above national averages, we are proud of the fact that we are not a test factory. The children succeed because they are taught well by qualified, dynamic teachers who put the children’s interests and development at the heart of everything they do. Lessons are fun, interesting and challenging. We ensure that the children have full access to a broad curriculum with sufficient time spent on a number of curriculum areas, including sport, music, drama and languages.

As well as taking part in daily sessions of English and maths, the children develop their knowledge, understanding and skills in other subjects through a topic approach to learning. Classroom teaching is complemented by themed days, visitors to school, special events, learning outdoors, and regular trips out of school. In Key Stage 2, we offer residential visits travelling further afield and increasing the children’s independence as they get older.

The Primary School is fortunate to have full access to specialised facilities at the High School, such as workshops, science labs, a food technology room, a sports hall and IT rooms. The children become very familiar with the High School as they have many opportunities to work with High School staff and pupils, as well as visiting the site on a regular basis. When the children reach Key Stage 2, they benefit from specialist subject teaching by teachers from the High School in French, science, design and technology, music, computer science and physical education.

All our children are encouraged to take an active part in school life. We are renowned in the area for our sporting prowess and compete in a range of sports. We are often successful in local and county competitions. Opportunities are provided throughout the school year for our children to perform on stage. The excellent quality of our productions is frequently commented on. The children sing daily as a school, as well as for audiences in the various assemblies and concerts. The school offers a comprehensive programme of clubs that take place every evening throughout the term.

We expect parents to become fully involved in their child’s education and take an active interest. Research shows that children who are supported at home from a young age, especially with reading, make rapid progress. We fully subscribe to this theory.

If you would like to visit our school and speak to a member of staff, please do not hesitate to contact the office. We look forward to welcoming you to our school.
