Welcome to Wigmore Primary School
Wigmore Primary School is a vibrant, stimulating and safe environment in which to learn. Our children are polite, behave well, work hard and enjoy their learning. Because of this, children flourish and make excellent progress, as evidenced in the exceptional progress of students throughout the school in recent years.
We welcome children between the ages of 4 and 11, including many from our integrated Nursery facility. The school has a Pupil Admission Number of 30 children into Reception, which we accommodate in combined classes in Reception and Key Stage 1. Children tend to join the school at different times in their Primary education which we accommodate in single class groupings at Key Stage 2. Enrolment at Wigmore Primary School is a preferential characteristic in determining acceptance for places at Wigmore High School.
Our dedicated staff team are committed to providing a happy, safe and engaging environment that allows our children to succeed and our on-site Head of School is always on hand to support learning and liaise with parents. Each class is supported by at least one Teaching Assistant and the team are extremely experienced and highly skilled. We encourage children to be inquisitive learners, who value their achievements and respect everyone in our learning community and have well-developed systems to support our children’s emotional development and well-being. As a result, the school was successful in obtaining the Values Based Education Quality Mark in 2023.
Although most headline measures for 2023 put us in the top 10% of Primary schools nationally, we are proud of the fact that we are not a test factory. The children succeed because they are taught well by qualified, dynamic teachers working in partnership with families to put the children’s interests and development at the heart of everything they do. Lessons are fun, interesting and challenging. We ensure that the children have full access to a broad curriculum with sufficient time spent on a number of curriculum areas, including sport, music, drama and languages. As well as taking part in daily sessions of English and maths, the children develop their knowledge, understanding and skills in other subjects through a topic approach to learning. Classroom teaching is complemented by themed days, visitors to school, special events, learning outdoors in our Forest Schools programme, and regular trips out of school. In Key Stage 2 we introduce the opportunities for residential activities. Year 3 have a sleepover in school and year 4 visit Oaker Wood for an outdoor adventure. Our year 5 and 6 students travel further afield with a residential activity experience, most recently at a centre in Wales. This helps develop their independence, ready for secondary school.
The Primary School is fortunate to have full access to specialised facilities at the High School, such as workshops, science labs, a food technology room, a sports hall and IT rooms. The children become very familiar with the High School as they have many opportunities to work with High School staff and pupils, as well as visiting the site on a regular basis.
All our children are encouraged to take an active part in school life. We are renowned in the area for our sporting prowess and compete successfully in a range of sports. Opportunities are provided throughout the school year for our children to perform on stage and the excellent quality of our productions is frequently commented on. The school also offers a comprehensive programme of clubs that take place most evenings throughout the term.
