Leadership
At Wigmore Primary School, we endeavour to develop leadership skills alongside teaching our children to become good citizens through a Values Based Education.
Children take on key leadership roles so that they may shape the vision of our school. Leaders develop a deeper understanding of complex issues and how these pertain to their own lives. We encourage children to articulate their views and support the school in every aspect of the curriculum to continually evolve and improve Wigmore Primary School.
There are a range of Pupil Leadership opportunities available for children to participate in. Children are either elected into these roles by their peers or, some roles require children to go through an application process.
House Captains
Every child is a member of one of our four houses which are named after local rivers.
They are called Arrow, Teme, Lugg and Wye.
Each year we ask Year 6 children to put themselves forward to be a House Captain to represent their house on behalf of the school. Two children are chosen to become House Captains as a result of the application process.
House Captains have a variety of responsibilities including counting house point totals, supporting their house during Sports Day, accompanying visitors around our school and being exceptional role models to all.
School Council
At Wigmore Primary School, the School Council is run and led by the children and it takes an active role in making decisions about the school on behalf of all the children.
We are proud to have pupil representatives from each class that take part in School Council meetings. Through Class Council, all pupils can raise issues, share ideas and take part in discussions that involve everyone reaching a democratic solution. Wider issues that arise at Class Council are discussed further at School Council, this ensures that as many pupil voices as possible are heard. Pupils at Wigmore Primary School know that we have to work in unity in order to progess.
The School Council is made up of two representatives from each class. Each class elects a representative who attends School Council meetings. Meetings are held reguarly and representatives bring together ideas, comments and concerns that are raised in class time prior to the meeting. An agenda is set and sent to all the classes to discuss.
Social Justice Leaders
The Social Justice Leaders care about solving problems with social inequity (in school, locally, nationally and globally) that we face on a daily basis. It aims to empower children to become caring and responsible critical thinkers in a global community. Children apply to become Social Justice Leaders and care about many different issues of social justice. The Leaders hope to spread awareness and engage members of the school community through their communication.
Social Justice Leaders have a democratic vote on which topic to focus on. Depending on the topic, different activities will be planned to help educate members of the community about the injustices that exist concerning that specific area.
Eco Commitee
Eco-Schools is an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a framework to help make sustainability an integral part of school life.
The Eco-Schools programme is focused on nine key topics. These are:

Water
Biodiversity
School Grounds
Healthy Living
Transport
Litter
Waste
Global Citizenship
The Eco Commitee formulate an action plan based on an environmental review that takes place at the beginning of every year.They then work towards improving the school to be more eco-friendly.
Measuring and monitoring is an integral part of the Eco-Schools program, providing the school with all the evidence needed to showcase our environmental success.
Science Ambassadors
Science Ambassadors apply to become a shining light for all things science and support the Science Lead develop the subject. They have a whole host of jobs including:
Helping teachers set up science lessons
Help to keep resources organised
Discussing science with any special visitors!
Feedback thoughts/ideas about science and what learning has been taking place in their class through half termly meetings
Create a termly science newsletter
Record science learning in class through taking photos
Sports Leaders
Our Sports Leaders work with Shrewsbury Town FC to enable children to develop their own leadership skills as well as enhancing others sporting experience in school. They become a vital part of the playground by inspiring others to become more active socially, physically and mentally. The Sports Leaders work with children across the school once they have been trained by the team from Shrewsbury Town FC.
Buddies
Children in KS2 can apply to become a Buddy. Buddies help their peers resolve conflict, within the school playground, using mediation. The Buddies are trained, to mediate and resolve disputes in a private, safe and confidential way. They support children to make positive interactions and enjoy thier playtime to the fullest.
This important role can be extremely beneficial to the children in the playground as well as the Buddies themselves.
