Art & Design
INTENT:
To provide our students with a diverse and exciting curriculum that empowers individuality and develops young minds. Where creativity is at the heart of their being. We aim to foster a stimulating environment where students feel safe and have the independence and self-confidence to experiment, make mistakes and problem solve.
In Art & Design, students will study an ambitious curriculum that is driven by creativity and ideas. They will be encouraged to be independent and foster self-expression and to feel passionate about drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking.
Students will study and develop a wide range of creative skills and will be provided with the opportunity to explore the work of artists, architects and designers. They will be encouraged to look at the world around them to influence their creativity.
Students will learn a wide range of transferable artistic skills through the study of quality artworks, learning to present work professionally, draw with a delicate and skillful hand and analyse and evaluate artists work.
IMPLEMENTATION:
Our Key Stage 3 curriculum provides students with an opportunity to explore varied units of work which cover the formal elements of art through drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics and printmaking, providing the platform for development to Key Stage 4 and beyond.
Our units change yearly to keep the learning exciting and fresh. Both modern and historical artwork will be covered to give the broadest knowledge of Art & Design, student may find themselves creating fairy tale book sculptures and kit bash aliens to drawing faces and painting fish.
To foster a love of independence, pupils are encouraged to use the art room at lunchtime and afterschool to develop their practical work and gain additional teacher input.
Our Key Stage 4 GCSE Curriculum provides the opportunity to develop an adventurous, creative and inquisitive approach to learning. Through studying both historical and contemporary art practice students will develop the skills to formulate and express their own understanding. This will manifest itself in both written and practical art work. The art work produced will be a range of personal responses which embrace a range of ideas devised from both their inspiration and imagination. Due to the fast pace and nature of the subject student’s skills and knowledge will develop quickly and we will always endeavour to make the projects varied and exciting.
Students will develop the skills to respond to set themes and briefs by investigating, analysing and experimenting using art, craft and design from vast and varied sources. You will develop your imaginative powers and the skills to express your ideas, feelings and meanings.
The GCSE in Art & Design follows on from what students learn at Key Stage 3 (Years 7 - 9). The emphasis in this GCSE is on the process of developing their own ideas and work. Central to this is the sketchbook where students will record their artistic journey.
