The Duke of Edinburgh Award at Wigmore High School was launched in 2017 and is a thriving and successful. We average an annual intake of 40 pupils for the Bronze Award during Year 9 and they now have the opportunity to undertake their Silver Award in Key Stage 4

Our belief at the school is that all pupils have a right to access such an exciting programme and we are committed to helping pupils achieve their goals within the programme itself.

Bronze Award recruitment takes place during January of Year 9 and the aim is that most pupils will complete the Award by the beginning of Year 10.  They are then offered the opportunity to undertake the Silver Award.

For both levels of the Award, pupils are involved in learning new skills, participating physical activities and volunteering within their community, as well as an expedition.

 

Bronze Award

The Bronze Award has 4 sections, Volunteering, Physical, Skills and Expedition. Participants must do a minimum of 3 months activity for each of the Volunteering, Physical and Skills sections, and plan, train for and do a 2 day (1 night) Expedition.

Participants also have to spend an extra three months on one of the Volunteering, Physical or Skills sections. It’s their choice which one and, though they can change their mind later, they should decide which section they want to do for longer at the beginning. Knowing how long they’re going to do it for will help them to choose their activity and set their goals for each section

 

Silver Award

The next step up from Bronze is the silver award ... participants need to be in Year 10 to start doing their Silver DofE programme. 
 
The Silver DofE programme again has 4 sections, Volunteering, Physical, Skills and Expedition. They need to do at least 6 months Volunteering and a minimum of 6 months on either Physical or Skills and 3 months on the other. They may choose which one they do for longer.
 
The Expedition section involves planning, training for and doing a 3 day (2 night) expedition.

Benefits of DofE

Completing a Duke of Edinburgh Award is a fantastic opportunity that allows students to continue current activities or new skills as part of the physical recreation, skills and volunteering sections of the award. It also allows students to make new friends and develop their teamwork skills, which are important throughout the rest of their education and beyond. 

The sense of responsibility that participants will feel will allow them to develop problem-solving and communication skills. This is done simply through having to meet self-made deadlines of completing sections of the award and planning the Expedition. Pupils will find that time keeping and maturity rapidly increase as they meet the challenges of the Award.
