Art and Design
Intent
Our Art curriculum develops creativity, sets challenges, engages and inspires children and equips them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. The curriculum has appropriate subject knowledge, skills and understanding to explore and investigate, create and evaluate artwork as set out in the National Curriculum and so will enable the children to reach and exceed their potential at Wigmore Primary School.
The EYFS Framework for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:
- have artistic and cultural awareness that supports their imagination and creativity.
- have regular opportunities to engage with the arts, enabling them to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials.
- have a quality and variety of what they see, hear and participate in which is crucial for developing their understanding, self-expression, vocabulary and ability to communicate through the arts.
The National Curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:
- are exposed to frequency, repetition and depth in their experiences which are fundamental to their progress in interpreting and appreciating what they hear, respond to and observe.
- produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
- become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
- evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
- know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
Long term and medium term planning for art and design lessons are planned using the Kapow art and design scheme for YR-6. Nursery also follow elements of the EYFS Kapow provision.
Implementation
Teaching and learning
Our art and design curriculum provides a clear and comprehensive scheme of work that will show progression of skills across all key stages within the strands of art. The children will be given opportunities to present their sense of vision through observation, experimentation and illustration. Pupils are encouraged to use their imagination through a wide variety of media. Manipulative skills are developed as well as an awareness of colour, texture, design and dimension.
